Bathroom budget worksheet
Use this free worksheet to map out your bathroom remodel budget before you talk to contractors. It helps you list the work, track allowances, and compare estimates side by side so you stay in control.
What this worksheet is for
A bathroom remodel can get expensive fast. The biggest reason is simple: people start without a clear list of what they want, what they can spend, and what must be included in the written scope.
This free downloadable worksheet gives you one place to organize the basics:
- your rough budget range
- the parts of the job you want priced
- tile and fixture choices you already know
- items you still need to decide
- room for notes from each remodeler
It is not a quote, bid, or guarantee. It is a planning tool. Real price depends on the size of the bathroom, the scope of work, the tile and fixtures, hidden moisture or framing damage, and your area.
If you are still figuring out what a realistic remodel might cost, start with our costs guide and then use this worksheet to keep your numbers organized.
What to put in your budget before you download estimates
Most homeowners focus on pretty finishes first. That is normal. But in real bathroom remodels, tile labor, demolition, waterproofing, and fixture installation often take a big share of the budget.
Typical ranges in the US:
- minor refresh: $3,000-$10,000
- mid-range remodel: $10,000-$25,000
- full gut remodel: $25,000-$50,000+
- tub-to-shower conversion: often $4,000-$12,000
- porcelain floor tile installed: often around $8-$25 per sq ft
Those are only estimates. Your real number can change a lot based on layout changes, plumbing moves, tile size, niche shelves, custom glass, and damage found after demolition.
When you fill out the worksheet, break your budget into line items such as:
- demolition and disposal
- tub or shower work
- wall tile and floor tile
- vanity, sink, faucet, toilet, lighting, fan
- waterproofing behind tile
- painting and trim
- permit costs if required in your area
- contingency for hidden problems
A smart rule is to keep a contingency fund for surprises, especially in older homes. Bathrooms hide leaks. Once tile comes off, a licensed remodeler may find rot, mold, bad backer board, or framing damage.
Before you compare prices, learn what proper waterproofing should include. Skipped waterproofing is one of the most expensive mistakes homeowners pay for later.
How to use the worksheet step by step
- Write down your goal. Is this a light refresh, a standard remodel, a full gut, or a tub-to-shower conversion?
- List must-haves and nice-to-haves. Must-haves might be a new shower base, better storage, or safer access. Nice-to-haves might be heated floors or premium tile.
- Set a working range, not one exact number. A range gives you room to compare options.
- Note what stays and what changes. Keeping the toilet and vanity in the same place can lower labor costs.
- Track product allowances. If one estimate includes basic fixtures and another includes higher-end fixtures, the totals are not really comparable.
- Ask every remodeler to price the same scope. That is the only fair way to compare.
- Leave room for permit and repair costs. Local code and hidden damage can add work.
Use the worksheet when talking to remodelers, but protect yourself:
- hire licensed, insured, and bonded remodelers
- verify the license and insurance yourself
- insist that real waterproofing behind the tile is listed in writing
- get the price and scope in writing before any deposit
- follow local permits and building code
- hold final payment until the agreed work is complete
